The Montessori Method

The Montessori Method of Education originated in Italy over a hundred years ago. It evolved from the observations of Dr Maria Montessori, Italy’s first female doctor. She worked with children from a tenement slum, and amazed the world with her radical ideas of a child centred education. Her ideas have significantly influenced mainstream education worldwide. These ideas and materials Dr Montessori developed are still as effective and meaningful today as they were then, inspiring and helping children to freely develop at their own pace within a carefully prepared enabling environment.

The main aim of a Montessori education is to cultivate and stimulate a child’s natural curiosity and desire to learn.
All children at the Blackheath Montessori Centre are openly encouraged by teachers to learn and experience through their own motivation and interactions.
